The dreaded three-letter acronym hanging over Juniors and Seniors worldwide, the SAT has had a nearly-ubiquitous presence in high schools for decades.  From as early as eighth grade to as late as December of Senior year, students potentially battle this test in its various iterations for a sizable portion of their teenage years. Our mission at Clayborne is to demystify the SAT and provide a clear and finite framework for preparation.

Why Should you choose Clayborne?

Our proven track record of success rests on the fundamental principle of individualized learning. We customize our program for each student, ensuring that you use your time efficiently and put yourself in the best possible position for success. On average, our students receive over $25,000 (INSERT GRAPHIC) in scholarships than non-Clayborne students.  Our proprietary curriculum, SAT Champions, presents students with the questions that matter most and start  at their skill level.

What scores do Colleges want?

There are many factors that go into the college admissions process, but standardized test can definitely be a deciding factor. When applying, schools usually publish their scores for the 25th to 75th percentile range of acceptances. You can find average acceptance range of GPA versus SAT/ACT on ThoughtCo. Here are some SAT ranges for common Virginia/East Coast schools.

What is a good ACT or SAT score?

It depends on your college goals. We recommend you research schools to find out what typical ACT/SAT scores of incoming students. For example, Google searching “UVA ACT scores” will bring up typical scores of 29-33.  The “typical” scores are the 25th – 75th percentile scores of incoming students.  We suggest shooting for 50th – 75th percentile scores which in the case of our UVA example would be an ACT range of 31-33.

Should I take the ACT or the SAT?

It depends on many factors: academic background, test history, learning profile, prep timeline, etc. For more details, take a look at our blog post on ACT vs SAT!

When should I take the ACT or SAT?

The earlier the better. We recommend you start the process during the summer of rising Junior year with a baseline practice test. Ideally, you should be done with standardized testing requirements by the end of Junior year.

How many times should I take the ACT or SAT?

As many times as necessary to achieve your goals. Most schools will take into consideration the four most recent official tests you have taken, so the more the merrier!

What is “superscoring”?
The SAT is by default “superscored,” meaning most schools consider your highest Math and highest Verbal scores across all submitted tests. The ACT does not officially do this, but a number of schools have adopted superscoring practices.
Can I send just my best section scores?
No. For schools to receive your test scores, you must send the full test record through the appropriate ACT or SAT channel.
Do schools automatically see my scores?
No, unless you elect to send scores automatically to up to four institutions during registration (we do not advise this. See our blog post on ACT/SAT Registration and Score Submission Strategy).
How much time should I invest in SAT studying?

We ask students to invest 5 hours per week.  Ideally, students should spend 30 minutes a day working on homework and 2 hours per week with tutors (one math & one verbal).

When is the best time to start the SAT process?

Summer before Junior year

Is there a difference between in person and virtual tutoring?

No difference in outcomes.
